India in the 21st century is showing remarkable progress in the field of science & technology & in allied fields.

We have so much to boast of from our ancient cultural legacy to the Modern India, in terms of contribution to the world. Still we lack behind on the “social report card” on many pointers and areas from providing basics facilities to every citizen to mention few- Food; Safety; Drinking water; electricity; sanitation facilities and free education for all.

This paints the gloomy picture of “better India” initiative at every level-

  • 597 million people are still defecating in the open
  • Lack of sanitation facilities implores the beasts lurking behind the “Lack of toilets facilities” and the “Lack of hygiene amenities” disguises, which of course aggravate the poor health scenario and a rise in pandemic/epidemics scenarios now & than.
  • Women are more prone to the diseases and infections owing to the biological and cultural factors. They have to keep the morality hash tags intact; making dignified choices for them, worst-case scenario would be while travelling someplace or trying to use the public toilet facilities, which by every means would be a dead beat to use.
  • In the rural areas the picture is glummer as most of the times woman have to travel miles to fetch water for their basics needs. The cultural taboos during their menstrual periods have also been a great impediment for their reproductive health and rights. This in turn creates a vicious cycle of health hazards and stigmatization. It increases the outbreaks of Water borne diseases like- diarrhea.
  • In the plush cities scenarios, the malls bring out the “sophistication” of providing best amenities including sanitation under one roof to larger extent.
  • Travelling in the train, bus or any other local transport will delude your sense if you wish to stop for the toilet or defecation.

You must have noticed, the usual house structure, from the utility point of view, it was always advisable to have a toilet outside the house for all the sanitation purposes. As, defecation is always been considered as the “only waste” or “unimportant” and we have always neglected the cleanliness around the toilets and personal hygiene.

In a civilization where the Harappa culture people were the predecessors for one of the “best drainage system” and “sanitary engineering” in India, we have definitely regressed on these social progress cards facilitators.

What are the factors, which can bring HOPE and can provide the amiable solutions to this glaring reality?

  • Education brings self-awareness holistically to the rights and to the impending duties as a citizen of India. We can differentiate between right and wrong and the repercussions for the same.
  • People who have been urinating and defecting in the open on the railways lines; open fields, spaces, on the walls; probably anywhere when and if the need may arise, are indeed biggest problems/ posers.
  • “Self-taught classes” at the local level can be a good initiative to educate them for their Personal Hygiene and overall Sanitation.
  • Panchayati Raj Institutions are the lifeline for our country; so bring it to the foremost level.

Encouraging “citizen participation” in some kind of “reward program” can be a good motivator like reward for the “clean village”, “model village” reflecting “Clean India Initiative and Dream”.

  • Young students bandwagons can be encouraged like “Clean Scouts” for every school learning program emphasizing the basics of sanitation and proper amenities.
  • Creating and developing toilets facilities like DOMEX.
  • Taking help from the social media websites for creating the “citizenship charter” where in every interested citizen can help to create a better and clean India by sharing and propagating the words- Clean India; better India, propagating the DOMEX initiative.
  • Most importantly suggesting the “Biodegradable wastage plant” associated with these toilets can harness the potential of the waste management also.
  • The main crux lies in the actual participation of Government at the local levels; citizen’s participation and suggestive means to propagates these important messages from once city to another like DOMEX is doing.
  • When there would be dearth of proper sanitation facilities, people would be left of no choice except to defecate and urinate wherever they could. The greatest challenge lies in upgrading the sewerage facilities and to find means and ensure setting of toilets chains/ facilities, which are affordable and maintenance free. Domex latest initiative, the Domex Toilet Academy (DTA) programme is one such step towards making villages ‘open-defecation’ free.
  • Domex has come up with a solution to this. Domex, HUL’s flagship sanitation brand, currently runs the Domex Toilet Academy (DTA) programme. They build toilets in villages facing the problem of open defecation. Their effort has resulted in bringing the change in the villages of Maharashtra and Orissa and they aim to build 24000 toilets by 2015 in rural areas faced with the problem of open defecation.
  • Last but not the least,

You can bring about the change in the lives of millions of kids, thereby showing your support for the Domex Initiative. All you need to do is “click” on the “Contribute Tab” on www.domex.in and Domex will contribute Rs.5 on your behalf to eradicate open defecation, thereby helping kids like Babli live a dignified life.

Walk With Me # 74

“Snow was falling,
so much like stars
filling the dark trees
that one could easily imagine
its reason for being was nothing more
than prettiness.”
― Mary Oliver

Friends! Looks like we have geared up to welcome the winters, it snowed here 2 days back. The weather is under ‘white magic spell’ of winters. The roads are paved with the fallen leaves of different colors.

Hope you all are enjoying life in its best spirits? How was your Halloween night? We had so much fun on the Halloween night; I choose to be dressed up like a sorcerer for a change from witch.  😀 😀

We carved the pumpkin throughout the week & enjoyed our Trick or Treat fun. It was raining on the Halloween night, but nothing could deter the spirit of these cheerful ghouls, monsters, witches & little wonders to enjoy their Trick & Treating. What follows next day was of course sugar load flying all over the house?

I will catch up more with you all soon in my next “Walk With Me” series. Cheers ❤ ❤

HI! HOWDY? 😀 😀
